Forty-eight hairpins and one perfect rösti
Four friends, one rented hatchback and a group chat that ran out of exclamation marks somewhere above 2,000 metres.
ARThe rule was simple: whoever is driving picks the music, whoever is navigating picks lunch. By day two we had renegotiated everything except lunch.
The pass
Bormio → Stelvio
Start before the cyclists
Forty-eight numbered hairpins. We counted out loud like a rocket launch. At 14 the snow appeared. At 30 we stopped talking.

Bratwurst at 2,757 m
There is a sausage stand at the top. It is the greatest restaurant in Europe and I will not be taking questions.
Best meal of the trip cost seven euros.
Valleys that don’t end
Livigno → Zernez
The Ofen Pass
Larches turning gold, a river the colour of mouthwash, and four grown adults pointing at marmots.

The rösti
Crisp edges, butter, a fried egg, mountain cheese. We ordered one to share and then three more not to.
Lake day
St. Moritz
Cold water, warm sun
Two of us swam. Two of us filmed. The footage is mostly screaming.
Along the way.
