A thousand temples before breakfast
We rode e-bikes through red dust at 5 am and watched the plain light up, one spire at a time.
KMMira wanted sunrise. I wanted sleep. Bagan made the decision for us — the dogs started at 4:30 and the light started soon after.
Red dust and first light
Old Bagan
E-bikes in the dark
Headlamps, sandy tracks, and the silhouettes of stupas rising out of nowhere like a forest of stone.
The plain wakes up
From a small mound beside a nameless temple, the whole plain went from grey to gold in eleven minutes. Mira timed it.

Eleven minutes. I’ve never been so still for so long.
Tea-leaf salad
Fermented tea leaves, fried beans, tomato and garlic. We ordered a second plate before we finished the first.
Lacquer and river
Myinkaba · Irrawaddy
A lacquerware workshop
One bowl takes six months and fourteen layers. We bought the smallest one. It still feels like we stole it.
Sunset by boat
The Irrawaddy is wide and brown and patient. The boatman cut the engine and let the current do the rest.
Leaving the plain
Nyaung-U
Mohinga at the market
Fish noodle soup with a crisp fritter on top. The cheapest and best breakfast of the trip.
Along the way.
